Inspect and care for your irrigation system. In Harmony Sustainable Landscapes

Take time now to inspect and care for your irrigation system to save water and money in the summer.

Spring has arrived! Yes, we know it has been raining, but don’t ignore your irrigation system. Spring is the right time to inspect, adjust and maintain your system. A little attention now will save you lots of water (and money) during the hot and dry summer.

Check for leaks

  • Look for wet spots, puddles or low pressure, which can indicate leaks in lines, valves or sprinkler heads.
  • Inspect the tubing for any cracks or kinks that might turn into leaks, and replace them if necessary.

Inspect and maintain sprinkler heads

  • Are any heads clogged, missing or damaged? This can cause uneven watering and runoff.
  • Clean the heads to remove debris and ensure that water is flowing properly. Even small clumps of dirt, sand or grass can clog the heads. If needed, you can carefully detach the heads and use cleaning solution, rust remover and/or a brush to clean them.
  • Ensure you have positioned the heads correctly so you are watering the intended area and not your sidewalks or driveways.
  • Lubricate the heads to make sure they pop up and retract smoothly.

Flush your irrigation system annually

We recommend flushing your irrigation system at the beginning of each season. This will clean out any debris or dirt that has built up in the pipes over the winter. Carefully open the main valve and allow the water to run until everything runs clear.

Monitor water pressure

Check that the water pressure is within the recommended range (typically 40-65 PSI). A change in water pressure usually means there is a blockage or crack in the pipes. The sooner you address these types of issues, the better.

Consider a professional inspection

A licensed professional can ensure your irrigation system is functioning correctly and efficiently. Spring, before the main watering season, is a great time to schedule an inspection. The Irrigation Association certifies irrigation professionals. They understand the latest irrigation technology and are committed to sustainable solutions.

Change your sprinkler schedule to meet seasonal plant needs

Different plants have different needs for water. And your plants will need less water in spring and fall than during the hot summer months.

Consider upgrades to your system

If you don’t have a smart irrigation system, you are likely wasting water. Smart systems use sensors to detect changes in weather, water pressure and evaporation rates. This helps your system apply the right amount of water. You can also use an app on your phone to operate the system remotely.

If you have had your irrigation system for a number of years, a newer system will help you to improve water and energy efficiency.
