Aeration is a very effective way to improve lawn health. In Harmony Sustainable Landscapes

Autumn is a great time to get your lawn aerated. We are now planning our fall aeration schedule.

Aeration will do wonders to improve lawn health. Over time the top layer of your lawn’s soil naturally becomes compacted. Roots find it harder to get air, water and fertilizer.

Our mechanical aerator punches holes in your lawn. It removes small cores two to three inches into the soil to penetrate the compacted soil. This allows more air, water and nutrients to reach the roots.

Why is lawn aeration important?

Lawn aeration helps your lawn stay green and healthy. Aeration will improve lawn health by:

  • Reducing soil compaction
  • Improving oxygen content
  • Stimulating root growth
  • Improving fertilizer uptake
  • Enhancing water uptake
  • Reducing water runoff and puddles
  • Enhancing tolerance for heat and drought stress

Overseeding

We generally combine aeration with overseeding to fill in thin spots. Overseeding will improve lawn health by thickening the lawn. Weeds and moss have a difficult time getting established.

Spring and fall weather conditions are ideal for overseeding because of the warm soil temperatures and cool air. These conditions allows the seeds to grow without drying out.

The seeds should show shoots in about 10 days if properly cared for. You will need to lightly water the lawn regularly to help the seeds germinate.
