A cozy outdoor room will allow for safe socializing this winter. In Harmony Sustainable Landscapes, design by Courtney Olander.

The weather is growing colder and wetter, and this year we are all spending more time at home. As a result, many people are thinking about creating a comfortable outdoor space where they can safely socialize with friends and family this fall and winter.

This might be the year for you to create the outdoor room you have been dreaming about. You will enjoy your landscape more if you can use your outdoor living space year-round. In Harmony’s talented designers and expert installation crews are ready to help you turn your ideas into reality.

Here are some considerations in planning an outdoor room.

Uses

How will you use the space? Perhaps you would like to host meals, or you might prefer to focus on relaxation and conversation, hot drinks and snacks. You will want to create a space that can be adapted for different uses. Shorter social events might be more practical in the winter, and your choices may change when the weather improves.

Access

How will you access the space? Is there a driveway or natural pathway from one of your doors? You might like the space to be an extension of your living room, dining room or den. Will you need easy access to your kitchen?

Walls

What will the walls look like? Walls will help protect against weather. However, to connect the space with your landscape, you will not want the space to be completely enclosed. We can work with you to design walls that provide some protection and also allow air flow. Benches and storage containers can also wall off the space.

Roof

What kind of overhead cover would you like? A roof will help to block cold winds. It will also keep the warmth created by heaters in your outdoor space. You could consider a permanent roof, which will protect against both rain and sun, or a retractable awning.

Kitchen

Would you like to cook in your space? An outdoor kitchen could be simple, perhaps just a portable grill. Or it could include a range of elements, such as burners, a pizza oven, mini fridge, sink, bar and cabinetry.

Heat

You will want to provide one or more sources of heat. A fireplace can be a beautiful focal point of your room. Fireplaces give off warmth and also feel inviting. If the space is primarily for lounging, you might consider a fire pit or a gas fire table, which resembles a coffee table. If you would like to use the space for dining, you might prefer patio heaters or under-table heaters. Fuel choices may include wood, gas or electric.

Lights

You will want to light the space. This could include wall, table, floor and ceiling lamps. You will also want to light the access point, such as a pathway. Landscape lighting to illuminate trees or other accents can make the space more welcoming.

Furnishings

Your outdoor room will be at least partly exposed to the weather. You will want to choose sturdy outdoor furniture with weatherproof upholstery. And consider what elements will make it feel cozy. Blankets and throws can be used for extra warmth. Pillows and cushions on benches and chairs will keep your body away from cold structures. There is also a psychological benefit to warm décor: if your space looks cozy, it will feel cozy.
